Information Position PurposeThe Director of Fraternity and Sorority
Life (FSL) is a leader within Student Affairs responsible for
providing management for an active FSL system, ensuring a
values-based community experience. The Director takes needed
measures such as policy enforcement, educational programming, and
risk management to assure that all sorority and fraternity members
participate in an environment that is physically and emotionally
safe, secure and supportive of the educational and social process,
while holding expectations that students will be active
participants in leadership and governance. Advanced expertise is
required to manage a multifaceted program with national and local
organizations, which has policies and procedures accountable to
university, national/international governing bodies, local, state,
and federal entities.The nature of this position requires
significant evening and weekend hours as well as travel between
campuses as needed.Description of DutiesDepartmental Leadership
Leadership: The Director provides comprehensive leadership and day
to day management for the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL)
department, ensuring efficient operation and alignment with broader
university objectives.Departmental Representation: Serves as the
primary representative for the FSL department within the university
community and to external stakeholders. This involves advocating
for the FSL community’s needs, celebrating its achievements, and
fostering a positive image consistent with the university’s mission
and values. Departmental Oversight & StrategyStaff Management: The
Director is responsible for the search, hiring, supervision,
training, and evaluation of professional staff. This includes
creating and implementing staff professional development plans that
foster individual growth and skill advancement while effectively
meeting departmental needs. Program Assessment & Strategic
Alignment: The Director facilitates the ongoing assessment of
departmental programs and services. This involves evaluating their
effectiveness and impact, ensuring they directly align with both
university-wide and divisional strategic goals. The Director will
identify, develop, and ensure the implementation of new policies or
updates to current policies. Fiscal Management: The Director is
responsible for managing the departmental budget, including
forecasting, allocation, and oversight of expenditures to ensure
fiscal responsibility and optimal resource utilization for all
programs and services. The Director approves all expenditures
through the Greek Councils’ accounts, coordinates fundraising
activity and manages the Greek Life Office foundation accounts. FSL
Community Programming & Development Organization Advising: The
Director is responsible for ensuring active organization advising
within the Commonwealth University FSL community, which includes
developing and implementing comprehensive advisor training programs
and building strong, collaborative relationships with chapter and
council advisors. Oversight of Annual Chapter Accreditation and
Accountability: Designing, implementing and managing the chapter
accreditation system, evaluating performance against standards,
providing feedback, and enforcing policies in collaboration with
inter/national organizations. Chapter Recruitment and Growth:
Developing strategies for FSL community growth, overseeing
recruitment processes, and providing training on effective
recruitment and new member education. Training and Development:
Creating and delivering training programs for FSL leaders and
advisors on topics like leadership, risk management, and diversity,
offering coaching and mentoring. Marketing and Communication:
Executing a communication plan to promote the FSL community,
managing digital content, creating marketing materials, and serving
as a key spokesperson. Council Oversight: Provides oversight and
support to the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils (IFCs) on
each campus, ensuring their effective governance, program
implementation, and alignment with university and national
organizational standards. Student Success Programming: Designing
and implementing programs for academic achievement, leadership, and
holistic student development, while connecting students with campus
resources. The Director manages and oversees the development,
planning, and implementation of select social and co-curricular
programming and major campus events within Student Life. Emphasis
is placed on the value of community development, high scholastic
performance, leadership development, campus involvement, community
service and a commitment to diversity. Stakeholder Engagement
Stakeholders: The Director regularly engages with a complex network
of stakeholders, both on and off campus, to ensure the FSL
community’s support, compliance, and positive development.
·On-Campus Stakeholders: The Director collaborates with students,
university administration (including the Dean of Students Office,
Student Affairs leadership, and legal counsel), faculty, campus
services (e.g., Campus Police, Student Health, Residential Life,
Dining Services, Facilities Management), alumni relations, the
Office of Title IX and Conduct, the Office of Student Involvement,
and the University’s Non-Profit Foundations.Off-Campus
Stakeholders: The Director also maintains critical relationships
with national and international fraternity/sorority staff and
volunteer governing bodies, alumni, parents, local police and fire
officials, and community members.These extensive interfaces are
crucial for: Ensuring student safety and well-being. Promoting
compliance with all relevant policies and laws. Facilitating
effective crisis prevention and response. Advancing the strategic
goals of the FSL community and the University.Compliance, Safety &
Incident Management Hazing and Hazing Legal Compliance: The
Director is responsible for the development, implementation, and
ongoing oversight of comprehensive CU-wide Hazing Education
programs. These programs are designed to ensure full compliance
with and educate the campus community on all relevant anti-hazing
legislation, including the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act and the
Pennsylvania Timothy Piazza Hazing Law. This includes proactively
informing students, staff, and faculty about hazing definitions,
reporting procedures, consequences for individuals and
organizations, and promoting a culture of prevention and bystander
intervention in alignment with these critical legal frameworks.
Risk and Crisis Management: To strategically enhance the fraternal
community, the Director provides risk/crisis management for the FSL
community. The Director will develop and enforce FSL-specific
safety policies, serving as a primary incident responder,
conducting risk assessments, and collaborating with campus partners
on prevention and response. The Director is a mandatory reporter
and plays a crucial role in responding to and managing FSL-related
incidents that impact students, escalating to and collaborating
with appropriate university and external authorities. The nature of
this position requires significant evening and weekend hours. Other
Duties Dean of Students Leadership Team: The Director serves as a
member of the Dean of Students and Student Affairs management teams
and may be called on to perform management functions for the
division as needed. Other Duties as Assigned: Performs other duties
as assigned, which may include after-hours and weekend
responsibilities, to support the mission and goals of the
Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) department, Student Success, and
the University.Decision MakingMakes professional and independent
decisions on a day to day basis regarding FSL operations that are
in the best interest of students and the university. Ensures that
department programs and services are compliant with applicable
legal, compliance, policy or mandates from governing bodies, as
well as university and student organizational policies. Engages in
policy and procedure development, implementation, and decision
making that minimize risk to students, other constituents, and the
university.Fiscal ResponsibilityThe Director approves all
expenditures through the FSL Councils accounts, coordinates
fundraising activity, and manages the FSL Office budget and
foundation account.Supervisory ResponsibilitySupervision of two
Assistant Directors within the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life
as well as oversight of the FSL functions of two other positions.
Provide professional development opportunities to staff in order to
stay current with best practices. Selects, trains and supervises
FSL Office student workers.Minimum Requirements ProfileMaster’s
degree in student personnel, higher education administration or
related field.5 years of experience working in a campus based FSL
system.5 years of experience in student activity related
programming.5 years of experience with advising groups and
facilitating training on leadership development.Preferred
Qualifications2 years of experience in crisis management.2 years of
experience in supervision of professional employees.Applicant
